Me and my fiance are paying for our wedding ourselves, and on a tight budget. I want to know if it is inappropriate to ask my bridesmaids and groomsmen to pay for their dresses and rentals...
The guys are getting all the same style, while I am telling the girls to get it in a certain color, and have it knee-calf length... but they can get any style.
Is this inappropriate?
I will be paying for their jewelry (my gift to them) but do I also pay for their hair to be done as well as makeup..???
I have never been to a wedding, so this is ALL NEW to me!
Please help!
Is it wrong of me to ask my bridesmaids to buy their own dresses? What about paying for their hair to be done?
No honey all you pay for is the flowers they will carry and your gift to them(jewelry is always nice). They are responsible for buying their dress ( even though it is you that gets the final say in picking it out) they pay for their shoes (and coloring if necessary) their hair and make up and anything else/everything else. They provide their own transportation to your house and home from the reception. You will transport them from your home to the church to the reception.
Groomsmen rent their own tux ( even though the groom/bride will pick them out) They pay for shoes and haircuts and anything/everything else. They can expect a ride from the wedding to the reception, a flower for their lapel and a gift/token from the groom.

They usually buy their own dresses as part of tradition. However, if you are requiring them to have hair and makeup professionaly done YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT! If you don't care if they do it themselves then you don't have to.
In terms of jewelry as their present it doesn't really count. Jewelry to be worn on wedding day is a gift for you, not something you bought in appreciation of them.....so unless you plan on ponying up dough for some real jewels and not cheap crap from Claires you need to think of an additional gift. It doesn't have to be extravagant, even something as simple as inviting them for dinner and movie "girls night" after the wedding to say Thanks for all the time and expense they put into your wedding.

Usually the BM buy their own dresses, and as for their hair, I'd suggest allowing them to do their own--it isn't necessary for them to have their hair professionally styled.

Well, you need to consider that they may not be able to afford what you are asking. Also, consider that maybe your dream wedding maybe too much expense for you, therefore it would be unfair to expect others to foot the bill.

Every wedding I've ever been to the bridesmaids pay for their own dresses and hair. It is in a way, their gift to you. So, it is fine. Just tell them that you are letting them pick their own style so it will fit their budget.
Congrats on the wedding! I hope you have many happy years! =)

no its not wrong, your already on a tight budget for the ceremony and reception, they should be able to pay for their own dress and hair and make up and whatever else they need for the wedding.

bridesmaids traditionally purchase their own dresses and pay for their own makeup and hair. Anything that you offer to offset the price is generous but not necessary.
The only obligation you have in regards to the dresses is to keep your bridesmaids financial situations in mind when you pick out the dress.
Congrats and good luck!

I'm fairly certain most bridesmaids pay for their own dresses. Mine are. I'm buying their jewelry as well, and I've arranged for someone in my family to do their hair and makeup as well as mine (which was my family members gift to me). I don't think it's rude or inappropriate at all. Most of us live on budgets now that tradition has faded out and most couples pay for their own weddings instead of the brides family absorbing the cost, so I think it's expected.

Birdesmaids usually pay for thier own dresses ... so no, it won't be inappriopraite

That is part of the deal......They spend their money.
You buy them a gift....such as earrings that you want all your bridemaids to wear or necklace.
Is it wrong of me to ask my bridesmaids to buy their own dresses? What about paying for their hair to be done?
No. actually the bridesmaids usually pay for their own dresses now-a-days.

Traditionally the bridal party pays for their own attire.
As for their hair and makeup, you can let them know that you can book an appointment for them at XYZ Salon *if they wish to get their hair and/or makeup done* the day of the wedding and let them know how much it will cost, but it must be optional if they are paying their own way. If you can't pay for them, then you must be willing to live with self-done hair and faces.

My bridesmaids paid for their own dresses, and their hair. i paid for their bouquets. just be sure that when you pick out the dresses, its nothing outragously expensive and that they can all pay for it.

The last 2 weddings I was in, I paid for my own dress, shoes, hair and makeup. It wasn't even offered to help. It didn't bother me, I was honored to be in the wedding.
I don't think it's such a big deal to ask them to pay for their own things. It's nice if you can pay for it for them, but I also think it's understood that sometimes, financially, it just can't be done.
It doesn't really matter what everyone says or thinks though, you've got to do what is best for you. If you can't afford to pay for the dresses/hair/make up, let your girls know up front. But still ask them to be in your wedding.
Good luck and Congratulations!!!

it is absolutely appropriate to ask them to pay for their own clothes. when i got married, i told my bridesmaids to get a black dress, nothing too slutty, and kind of plain -no huge flowers, tons of beading, etc...that way everyone could choose a dress that they could wear again that fit their personal budget. and instead of tuxes for the guys, i picked a black blazer with a tie and white shirt and dark gray slacks. everyone looked nice, paid for their own clothes, and ended up with something that they could wear again. as far as hair and makeup, that's up to you. i just let everyone do their own hair and make-up--we all helped each other with it and drank champagne--it was lots of fun!

From what I know most bridesmaids pay for their own dresses. But having been to enough weddings I can assure you that I really appreciate a bride that takes into consideration the fact that I don't have a lot of money to spend on "one time dresses". (Usually the dresses are NOT my style at all so it can be annoying to spend hundreds of dollars on a dress someone else likes that I think I look like a frump in.)
The best thing someone has ever done is make an amazing compromise. Give out fabric swatches of the colour/fabric you want and a rough idea of what you want the dresses to look like and allow the bridesmaids to have a little freedom to make alterations. Nothing drastic of course but allowing them to change the neckline would make a big difference.
I know I look dumpy in halter style tops so having the option to choose a more flattering (thin strap) option made me look much better. (I'm not trying to steal the spotlight but this meant that I didn't resent having to spend $250 on a dress and the pictures don't look like a bunch of dumpy girls.)

I think under these circumstances it is completely understandable and appropriate. I had to do this with my bridesmaids too and they were FINE with it. I didn't expect them to buy an outrageously expensive dress. I actually took them both shopping together though, so that they both chose the same dresses, same color and the price was reasonable and I knew I would APPROVE and like the dresses. I think we found some beautiful dresses for like $60.00 %26lt;I had a christmas wedding - red knee length dresses%26gt;. Our groomsmen actually just wore nice suits with dark ties and we did the decorations, food, flowers etc ourselves too.
In a perfect world this wouldn't be necessarily NORMAL or appropriate to SOME people, especially if money was NO ISSUE - but I think you are FINE asking this of them and I would assume you are talking to them all so they all understand and express their complete "OK" with it too? If so, no sweat!

Nope its inappropriate at all!
For my wedding in june...
I picked out the bridesmaids dresses ( my girls are all around the same size we are have around the same taste too)
I picked them out at davids.
So they all went in at different times
and payed for their dresses at the times
that were best for them.
I also payed for the dresses
in other weddings that ive been in.
All the girls should be totally happy to
go out and get the dress you would like!
ANd im doing the same thing with
jewelry :)
Good luck girl.

Why would you expect a friend to pay for a dress of your choice which they will never wear again? They will also be expected to wear appropriate shoes. In addition, your attendants are expected to host a shower for you. As well, they have to give up at least a day to assist you in any way at your wedding
Dress $100 - $200
Shoes $100
Hair $100
Makeup $100
Travel/Accommodation $100 - $500
Shower $200
Wedding Gift $100
These are minimum charges for these items, many times the prices are much higher
Can you choose a style that is agreeable to all and have the dresses made for them? Rented for them? Have less attendants if you cannot afford to pay for your wedding

In the US it is traditional for the bridesmaids to purchase their own gown and groomsmen pay their tux rentals, however other countries have different traditions. If you are in the US or parts of Canada, then you should be fine with that portion of the plans.
However, if you want their hair and makeup done by a professional for the wedding, then you need to pay for those services for them. It's not required for a wedding. I'm offering to provide it to my maids if they wish to have it done, but I'm not requiring it.

actually it's ok
you just have to explain to them that you are on a tight budget
im sure they would understand
i love being a bridesmaid!
and i really dont mind paying for my dress and my make up
i dont mind the expense, just being a part of a wedding makes me flattered because it's a special occasion!
Is it wrong of me to ask my bridesmaids to buy their own dresses? What about paying for their hair to be done?
Like I tell everyone, we're in the noughties now, so pretty much anything goes. I have told my bridesmaids that while I would love for them to be by my side, I can't afford anything for them, as I can hardly afford the wedding. I have said that they will need to prepare themselves, and therefore they can choose their dress, shoes and do their own hair. Most girls know how to do their hair nicely, so it's not a problem really. And besides, I'm doing my hair and makeup, so if I'm not spending on myself, I'm not spending on them.
If they aren't happy with it, they will still be a bridesmaid in my eyes, but I just can't afford to look after them as well as myself. Perhaps your budget isn't as tight as mine, but I just thought I'd put in my view. I hope it's helpful. At the end of the day, if they're your friends, they will understand. I know mine did.

Is it wrong of me to ask my bridesmaids to buy their own dresses? What about paying for their hair to be done?
I am the same way! My fiance and I are paying for the wedding are self, with little help from my mom. My bridesmaids and his groomsmen are paying for everything on there own! It how it goes! Unless you have ALOT OF MONEY and can afford to pay for eveyrthing, then having them buy everything it was is normally expected.
I am also giving my bridesmaids the opition of comming to my house for us all to do our hair together, with two family friends who are hair dressers for a living. By no mans do they have to come or get there hair done by them, but that could be something you could do together!
Don't let this little thing get to you, there are so many more things that you should worry about.
Good Luck and Congratulations!

They are responsible for paying for their own attire. The bride and groom are not required to pitch in unless they are requiring very expensive dresses ($200-300 and up).
If you are requiring your bridesmaids to have their hair and makeup done you should pay some or all of the cost. If the hair and makeup is optional then you don't have to pay.
Is it wrong of me to ask my bridesmaids to buy their own dresses? What about paying for their hair to be done?
I had my girls pay for their own dress, but i made sure they were on sale for them i got them as cheap as possible so they could afford it. Also if you get a group rate for you hair and makeup it will be cheaper( my girls are paying for their own hair and makeup) But im paying for my moh to get her toes and nails done
Is it wrong of me to ask my bridesmaids to buy their own dresses? What about paying for their hair to be done?
The attendants traditionally buy their own outfits (and getting their own hair and make up done for the bridesmaids). If the bride and groom wish to contribute to the costs, they most certainly can, but the attendants shouldn't assume the couple are going to do this.
Is it wrong of me to ask my bridesmaids to buy their own dresses? What about paying for their hair to be done?
I thought that bridesmaids always paid for their dresses themselves unless the bride is able to afford buying everyone's dresses.
I'm having my bridesmaids purchase their own, but I'm being concious of the cost.
They should be understanding...

You are right on! They pay for the dresses. I paid for their manicures and pedicures, ( we all went together and had so much fun!) but I left them to do their own hair and make up.
It's wonderful that you are allowing them to select the style. They must love you for that!!!

First of all congratulations on getting married!!
Well my sister got married last year and she and my brother in law bought everything for the bridesmaids and groomsmen. Plus a gift for being in their wedding.
I honestly feel that the bride and groom should pay for it because it's an honor to be asked to be in a wedding. If you want those people in your wedding, they shouldn't have to pay a dime. If you're on a really tight budget then maybe you should cut down on the people in the wedding party. Or maybe have a small wedding with some family and friends and spend majority of money on your honeymoon. I would get offended if I was asked to pay to be in someone's wedding. But everyone's different. Congratulations again!!
